Day 9 – #AprilBlogADay – Advice

What would you say to your beginning teacher-self?chief learner banner

I would give two pieces of advice to my beginning teacher-self.

  1. Don’t be such a know-it-all. You don’t know anything, really. It’s OK to not know. It’s OK to admit your ignorance. It’s OK to have questions. In fact, you will not begin to succeed until you become the chief learner in your classroom.
  2. Don’t do any harm.  Don’t take a child’s behavior personally. Hold your tongue. Hug instead. Only love.

  1. Isn’t it funny that the longer we teach the easier it is to tell kids we don’t know the answer to all of their questions? Great post!

  2. Thanks, Janelle, for stopping by! Yes, so true. What kind of a person would that be who knew the answers to all their questions?

S/he would either be a liar, the kind who pretends to answer with authority even though they don’t have a clue, or it could be a person who doesn’t give the children permission to ask all their questions.

Here’s to more growing during #AprilBlogADay!

  3. I love #2! I became a much better teacher after I became a mom. And I hate that some adults think it’s ok to yell at and belittle kids just because the kids are smaller than they are.

    1. Yes, isn’t that the truth. Now, when I look at my kindergarteners, I try to always remember that they are somebody’s sweet baby. Thank you for stopping by. Funny, I was just reading your blog a bit ago. You had quite a week!
