Day 14 Slice of Life – Experimenting with a New Theme

So, it’s been a week since my comment section stopped working. It is a glitch on that theme from Edublogs, but they are working on it.

It was unfortunate timing to come during the Slice of Life. My blogging over the past few years has been really sporadic, so there were many weeks and months when I wouldn’t have noticed a problem with commenting. This month, however, my sweet new friends in the Slice of Life challenge noticed right away and let me know. It is good to be back to blogging and trying Slice of Life with you all.

Today I tried a different theme, something that will allow the comments to work. I haven’t changed the theme for years, so it was probably a good thing to explore.

I changed it, but I think I liked the Before theme better. However, I’ll live with the After theme for a bit and see if it grows on me.

Hopefully, the commenting works better on this one!

Do you have an opinion about which theme you like better?

Before
After

  1. I like the second (grey text font) as I think the design flows together a little better. Funny, it used to be that so many people used RSS readers that theme really didn’t matter at all. But now theme is again important for visitors’ blogging experience.

    1. Thanks, Kevin, I hadn’t thought of the color of the font, but I see it now. I’m glad. Yes, RSS readers–I almost forgot about them. Thank you for visiting.

  2. I like both themes! I hate when comments don’t work. That is why I switched my blog over to weebly from Blogger! Hoping you get so many comments now.

    1. Thank you, Kathleen. When you switched, did you lose posts? Did you have to start over or were you able to literally move the blog there?

      1. I just had my questions answered by going to your new blog. I saw the link to your Blogspot blog. That’s a good way to do it. All the best to you.

    2. I actually like the after theme better because the print is bigger! I’ve never had good vision, but aging eyes make seeing harder.

I am glad you’re getting comments now. I’m glad the comment glitch didn’t dissuade you from blogging.

      1. Glenda, thank you for your comments and for telling me when it wasn’t working on my old one. I actually just noticed the larger font, and I think I like that too.

  3. I’m just glad, for you, that your comments are working! Before SOL, I never really realized how much comments fuel our writing! I remember that when I am tired and reading a stack of papers, most of the time!

    1. Ah, good application to adding comments to student work! I am in the midst of writing comments for our virtual learning assignments now. I do need to keep in my how inspiring positive comments are.

  4. I like them both! I wonder about the impact on your writing of changing the theme…I am so affected by the aesthetics of whatever is around me! Glad your comments are back, too.

    1. Thank you, Amyilene. I like the aesthetics too. One thing I am not liking about this theme are the ALL CAPITALS FOR SO MANY TITLES. Many I can learn how to tweak that.

  5. Beautiful picture in both themes. Sorry for the comment difficulties. Comments fuel us as bloggers. Happy writing!

    1. Thank you, Terje, for the comment. Yes, it is inspiring and fueling–a great word for it. That painting has been hanging in my home for about ten years. My daughter painted it in high school.

  6. I like them both! I had the same blog theme forever. I changed it two years ago and the new one has never really grown on me. I think I need to change up again. I really liked my old theme, to be honest. I like the bright colour of your banner picture. I’m glad you kept that.

  7. I think the second font, meaning your new one, is a little easier to read. The theme is not as important as the content. Honestly, I couldn’t tell you what my core of bloggers platform even looks like. I think most of us use the default pages. Comments are good. They strengthen our writing.

    1. Thank you, Susan. That is good to keep in mind. I agree content is more important than aesthetics! I am learning so much from the other Slice of Life posts I read. I’m still not really figuring out how to watch for and write about a true slice of life. The month is half over, though, so I am going to keep trying!

  8. I also think the after is a little more streamlined and visually pleasing. I am so glad you were able to get the problem fixed and can now receive comments!

  9. Glad that your comment glitch has been fixed! It’s great you are back to blogging! Comments are a key component to blogging.

  10. Both look good, I think. I love that (if I’m remembering correctly) it’s still your daughter’s painting!

    1. Hello, Joy! Thank you for commenting. Yes, it is Katie’s painting. She did it as a senior in high school almost ten years ago. I took a picture of it again yesterday for this header. There are some reflections off the glass, so it wasn’t a great shot. I do love that painting.
