Poetry Friday – A Wedding Pantoum

Paul and Christine, a love story
You hold those joyful smiles
looking together in the same direction
sure of the Love from above

You hold those joyful smiles
partners in life and love
sure of the Love from above
kind pressure of God’s presence

partners in life and love
support during dark times
kind pressure of God’s presence
with you for a lifetime and eternity

support during dark times
God is your Good Shepherd
with you for a lifetime and eternity
not gazing just at each other

God is your Good Shepherd
making you to take rest
not gazing just at each other
confidently forging ahead

making you to take rest
Author of your faith gives hope
confidently forging ahead
story of a beautiful tomorrow

Author of your faith gives hope
Christine and Paul, a love story,
story of a beautiful tomorrow
looking together in the same direction

(A pantoum created with help from Pantoum Generator.)

Finally, here is a gift of a poem I just read for the first time today: “What Can a Poem Do?” by Darius V. Daughtry

a poem cannot save a life
cannot Luke Cage your skin
fend off a dark alley attack
cannot make you less woman
or less poor
or less Black
and
thus
treated equally

Thursday was the wedding day, a perfectly warm-not-hot afternoon and evening. Today’s Poetry Friday round up is being gathered over at Radio, Rhythm & Rhyme by Matt Forrest Esenwine. He is celebrating the one-year anniversary of Friends & Anemones: Ocean Poems for Children, a beautiful anthology. Thank you, Matt, for hosting.

  1. Denise, this is the second love poem you wrote for young couples. It is sweet and well-written. The second poem you shared is thought-provoking. Thanks for encouraging us to write gratitude poems during November. It is like an morning or evening prayer.

  2. Denise, nothing beats a love poem! And this Pantoum is such a perfect form – I do love that Pantoum generator! These lines grab and hold my heart

    You hold those joyful smiles
    partners in life and love
sure of the Love from above

    This is pure love!

  3. Pantoum with so much circling around is a perfect form for this wedding day poem. What a lovely gift for the couple!

  4. I love the musicality of pantoums and yours did not disappoint – I’m sure they appreciated this lovely gift! (and by the way…what is a pantoum generator, and hope did you find it??)

  5. A love poem for the couple is a most special way to celebrate, Denise. This is wonderful & I love that picture, too. The second poem gives pause for all we might like about poetry. Thanks, and have a great weekend!

  6. Your pantoum is a beautiful gift. I’m sure it will be treasured. That last stanza is wonderful! Also, gorgeous fabric in your (?) dress, under the order of ceremony booklet.

  7. Lovely, Denise! What a thoughtful and beautiful wedding present. Thanks for sharing.

  8. Denise, lovely pantoum and I’m sure it wasn’t easy to write. What a celebration! Daughtry’s poem is stunning about the power of poetry. Thanks for sharing this poet with us.

  9. What a beautiful, personal gift! Great job with your pantoum, Denise. And congrats to the lucky couple!

  10. I enjoyed the second line poem form. That was really interesting. I’ve not seen that style before. Thank you for sharing. Also, thank you for sharing the “a poem cannot save your life” poem. I read the whole poem and absolutely love it.

  11. What a fortunate bride and groom to receive a gift of this pantoum from you. I so enjoy giving the gift of something written. And, they will look back on their day and this gift with appreciation. Circles of love indeed. Thank you for letting us share a bit in the wedding joy.

  12. What a lovely gift your pantoum is! And thank you for the gift you gave to us. I hadn’t read “What Can a Poem Do?”. This line, especially, resonates with me. It’s what happened to me with my Persevere poem…

“a poem can rip away the untruths that have cocooned us”

  13. What a special gift! I especially like the line “story of a beautiful tomorrow.” That is where love grows – in the tomorrows!

  14. “looking together in the same direction” – What a wonderful and personal wedding gift, Denise! And thank you for the What Can a Poem Do? poem, which I’ve not read before. My first thought after the opening stanzas was, Oh, yes, it can! So I loved that the poet circled around to that way of thinking, too :>)

    ” a poem cannot stop a bullet
but can swallow the hate and spit back
    a sonnet”

    Utter gorgeousness.

  15. Denise, your poem is so lovely, and it is a gift that will be treasured for years to come.

  16. Such breath you gave us in this post, your pantoum poem, a couple coming together as one, the pantoum form so powerful for this. And then Daughtry’s powerful poem, giving us dire truth, a bit of love, and a tiny bit of hope–it was even more powerful for me hearing him read it, thanks Denise.

  17. What a beautiful and meaningful gift. The Pantoum lends itself well for a love poem.
