March 11 – Disco Dancing

March 11, 2023 TwoWritingTeachers.org

Tonight I did something I haven’t done in 40+ years. Disco danced!

We got a new remote control light for the ceiling, a light to brighten up a dark spot in our living room. I turned it on tonight and found a setting with a flashing rainbow light. I was surprised and then it made me smile. I said, “Oh, it’s like a disco ball! We can have a dance in here.”

Within moments, my husband was playing “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees loudly from the speaker. It made me laugh, and then I started dancing!

Next, “Play Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive,'” I said, as I took off my sweater.

I have always loved that song, but it reminds me of one of the first viral videos I ever saw. (In 1999, the only platform we had to share funny videos and other digital material was email. Who else remembers all those FWD:ed emails?)

I am participating in the March Slice of Life Challenge: A slice a day for all of March. Thank you, Two Writing Teachers!

  1. Denise, is that near your new skylight stargazing window? That could be a rainbow gazing window now too. It’s quite a celestial and heavenly show that is going on. That’s the coolest light EVER! I love the links to the disco songs too. The Bee Gees and Abba are two of my favorite disco groups. You bring back all the memories and make me want to get up and dance!

    1. Yes, Kim, it is near the skylight. That half of the room has always been so dark, and there wasn’t electricity up high for adding a light. The skylight is amazing by day, but at night to see our printer and a few other things we need a light at night. Maybe we’ll see a real rainbow in that window someday!

    2. I love moments like this! Music my passion and Disco is a favorite of mine. Keep finding times for dancing 🕺

  2. Denise,
I love the image of you having a dance party to disco music. The Bee Gees are one of my favorite bands of all time. zYhst light is cool. You’re turning your ceiling into a light show.

  3. What a fun night! Dance parties are the best…:) Your light looks really cool!

  4. These LED lights can turn any room into a party. Loved the image of you dancing and having fun!

  5. Oh my gosh, the Alien Song!!! I loved that and so did my kids!!! We played that repeatedly for days! Thanks for bringing back this memory, I’m going to send it to my boys that are now grown up. This will certainly bring lots of laughs and smiles. 🙂

  6. How fun and spontaneous! So good for one’s soul. I hope you have regular disco nights!!

  7. I find it amazing- the power of music. I love that it has the power to take you RIGHT back to the moment that song was released or even to a special memory that you associate with that song. I can’t help but be taken back to the awkwardness of highschool when I hear disco. It came on the heels of heavy rock music for me. In high school it was all about flannel shirts and Queen or Aerosmith. I boycotted disco initially.
Gotta say tho-when I hear “Stayin’ Alive,” I instantly see Travolta swinging his paint can. 😉

  8. I love this! It’s so care-free and joyful! I think I need some disco lights myself…

  9. Denise, I love your fun post! I personally remember the disco days, and I would do anything to go back in time to do a little disco dancing again. I guess I will just have to take a page from your book so I can “Get Down Tonight!”

  10. This is my idea of fun! I love to dance – and much to my husband’s horror, I adore disco tunes. That is a super fun light to have with the flashing rainbow effect. What a fun evening!
