March 13 – Six-Word Memoirs about Me

March 13, 2023 TwoWritingTeachers.org

Jennifer Kessler wrote a fun post yesterday called “Six-Word Memoirs About Me.” Now, I’m following her lead and telling you a bit about me in six-word memoirs.

  • Grew up loving and playing softball.
  • I love to eat (and fast).
  • Taught in California, Iowa, Arizona, Bahrain.
  • I’m chief learner in life’s adventure.
  • Two daughters who make me proud.
  • Married for 40 years in June.
  • Hobbies: reading, writing, cooking, crocheting, biking.
  • Good in technology, daring to click.
  • Cook vegan recipes and bake bread.
  • My beloved grandson is almost one.
  • This, first year I’ve enjoyed homeownership.
  • Retired and enjoying every sweet moment.

I am participating in the March Slice of Life Challenge: A slice a day for all of March. Thank you, Two Writing Teachers!

  1. Denise, I love six word memoir and it isn’t so easy to write – it’s a good lesson in the value of every single word. Stringing them together this way makes for a nice rhythmic flow in bursts of thought. This line, I think, is my favorite: “I’m chief learner in life’s adventure.” And I cannot believe your grandson is almost one!

  2. This: I’m chief learner in life’s adventure. Those are beautiful words about you – so true, and so humble. I like that you are a teacher and a learner. I haven’t noticed that you eat fast, but with all the learning to do as a chief learner on life’s adventure, I’m sure you are ready to get on with the experience! This is a lovely blog and gives me ideas for my middle school writers this week.

  3. This kind of format shows so much about what you value as you have to choose words so carefully. I loved learning more about you! My favorite line was the same as Kim’s. You show that in so many of your slices.

  4. I’m so glad you tried it out! I learned more about you. 🙂 I laughed at this one…”I love to eat (and fast).” Me too! You have to share some of your favorite vegan recipes!

  5. Such a satisfying and fulfilling life spun out with the help of your six word memoirs. It certainly is a fun slice format.

  6. I love how you use a series of 6 word memoirs to share all about your life. So much revealed in so few words! Congratulations on 40 years of marriage and your first year of home ownership. It sounds like retirement is treating you well.

  7. Love your suite of 6 word memoirs, with the culminating arc of your retirement. Congratulations!

  8. Denise, what a great writing exercise. I think I’ll steal this idea for a future post. I already have an idea percolating: sweet! One thing we have in common: I will be married for 40 years in November.

  9. What a great way to get to know you. We have lots in common, surprise, surprise, except the travel teaching. I’ve been married 40 years and enjoy crochet. But I’m afraid the limitation of the word count may be too much for me to handle.

  10. Denise, this is a fun format. I’m a fast eater, too. Maybe that’s a teacher thing. I’ve loved watching all your home-improvement projects, especially when they include Joshua trees!

  11. What a great way to share about yourself! You have written your autobiography. I learned a lot about you. I love, “I’m chief learner in life’s adventure.” You really had to play with language to condense a thought into six words total. I’m going to try this! Enjoyed so much!!

  12. What a great way to share who you are. This would be great to do with students at the beginning of the year. You can learn so much with few words. I added this to my list of slice topics.

  13. Love this format, and learning about you. 🙂 We cook vegan in my house too – – but I leave the bread baking to my boys when they are in the mood! I just can’t seem to have the patience!

  14. This is such a great format for giving readers a peek into who you are. I’ve tried 6-word slices before, and always find them incredibly difficult–but you make it look effortless. One of my favorites is: “Good in technology, daring to click.” –that “daring to click” seems like the key. I love how you’ve captured that.
