March 14 – White Women, Join Me

March 14, 2023 TwoWritingTeachers.org

Ron Desantis’ General Counsel Ryan Newman gave this description of WOKE: “it would be the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them.” And Ron Desantis wants woke-ism to die in Florida (and in the U.S., if God-forbid, he becomes president).

That is the backlash our nation is up against. People, many of them in positions of authority, are denying that there are systemic injustices in America and that we need to address them. It is so frightening. We need to speak up, so our nation becomes more perfect, not less.

I’ve known all along about the powerful book Saira Rao and Regina Jackson wrote and was published by Penguin Books last fall:

White Women: Everything You Already Know About Your Own Racism and How to Do Better

However, it took me until last month to finally purchase it. I don’t know why. Here is a great taste of their book in a Time.com article.

Are you a white woman? I would invite you to buy the book, read it, and discuss it with a small group. You are invited to join in this free Race2Dinner book club. After you access the book club, register, and then RSVP for one of the small groups. The first group met today, and three more are starting this week. Go and check it out. At the first meeting, the group will discuss the preface of the book. Then they will talk about one chapter a month after that.

I hope to see you in the Race2Dinner community. Do let me know if you join, please.

I am participating in the March Slice of Life Challenge: A slice a day for all of March. Thank you, Two Writing Teachers!

  1. Thank you for sharing this book! I might not have time to read it until summer, but it’s definitely on my list of need-to-reads.

  2. This is great that you are standing up against injustice and seeking to learn. I added this book to my list after you mentioned it at the slicers’ meetup. Thanks again for the reminder!

  3. I love that you are walking the walk and using your power & privilege to dismantle the status quo. Keep speaking up and out!

  4. Denise, count me in. I am interested and will look at joining later this evening when I am home from school. I’m ordering this today. I’m so grateful for your leadership and organization of a book club – I can’t wait to read alongside you and learn.

    1. Oh, Kim, I am delighted that you ordered the book and will join. I may have written misleadingly about my role. I’ve just joined one of the groups. Race2Dinner is the platform that Saira and Regina have created. The owner of KindCotton, I believe, initiated this book club.

  5. Denise, I’m totally on board with you. It is disgusting what is happening in Florida, it is plain wrong what the government is doing to teaching – and students, our children, are suffering. I do not know this book you suggest – looking it up now! Thank you!

  6. Thank-you for posting this, and trying to help. Sometimes I think of my parents or older relatives and I am grateful they are no longer with us to witness this travesty. Long long ago in my credential program I took a professional development dealing with racial biases and racism. It was an eye opener, to say the least. These biases are ingrained in us, and the first step is recognizing them. Thank-you for your slice.

  7. Denise,
I saw your post this morning but intentionally waited to comment until I finalized my post about “White Women.” I didn’t want to unwittingly plagiarize or repeat. It will be my slice tomorrow. Even though I joined the book club on Race2Dinner, I’m not sure I’ll participate. I’d prefer to discuss in a smaller group, perhaps via Zoom, but I’m hoping to find some local friends who will read the book w/ me (I’m relistening to the audiobook.) BTW, my slice on the book is much different.

    1. Glenda, thanks. I’ll look forward to reading your post tomorrow. If you RSVP for one of the book clubs–you pick the time and day–then you can have a Zoom discussion with a small group. My group meets the second Monday of the month. Yesterday there were 12 of us. It was nice meeting some new people from all over the country. Alternatively, I would be up for a small Zoom group with TWT people. What do you think?
