Spiritual Journey Thursday – Summer

To begin with, here are a few verses from one of my favorites, Psalm 19. This portion celebrates how the sun and other works of nature declare the glory of God.

1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
    the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
    night after night they reveal knowledge.
They have no speech, they use no words;
    no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
    their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
 It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
    like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
It rises at one end of the heavens
    and makes its circuit to the other;
    nothing is deprived of its warmth.

As I sit here on Friday afternoon in the A/C, feeling a little too warm and wondering if it will be cool enough for an evening walk, I began thinking again about summer.

I’m with Ramona, summer is not my favorite season. I love how she framed her post. But instead of giving her any ideas for finding summer love, I’ve found inspiration for my own summer love from reading her post.

I have a full summer with lots of goodness planned. Here are some of the events and rhythms of my summer.

Summering 2025

  • Family BBQs and celebrations
  • Summer Reading Program
  • No King’s Day Protest and more
  • My grandson’s third birthday party
  • Dana Point for our 42nd anniversary
  • Hiking and biking early, before the heat
  • Minnesota to see my expecting daughter
  • Campaign volunteer for Claiborne for Congress
  • Writing a poem a day for the Stafford Challenge
  • Continue reading, praying, deconstructing, and reconstructing my faith in Jesus. (I will not give up, despite the way the church in America seems to be giving up on Jesus for political power.)

  1. Denise, What a wonderful list of good things for this summer. I, too, am expecting a new grandbaby. When is yours due? I have to take my walks early in the morning. The evening is still pretty warm. I love how you share desert flowers. They are so starkly different from our lush Louisiana flowers, but still as beautiful.

  2. Denise, I love how the psalm you chose reminds us that words are not always necessary. Sometimes quiet, a sigh, a smile, a look of peace and contentment speak louder than any spoken word. Your list is a good combination of time spent with others as well as quiet time spent for yourself. Bob

  3. Denise, thanks for pointing us to this gorgeous psalm. I love the opening verse:
    “The heavens declare the glory of God;
    the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
    I also love the closing verse of Psalm 19, easily a closing verse for daily reflections. Your picture and poem is exquisite. It is joyous to notice God’s world and all His creations.
    I’m glad that my summering call led you to discover your summer events and rhythms.
    What Summer Reading Program are you participating in? I’ve picked up several and I’m trying to settle on one.
    The anti-spam word is “heaven oh.” So appropriate for your post.
    Happy summer!

  4. Denise, I am sorry that I missed seeing your SJT blog post. It is a marvelous blending of thoughts combined with the Psalm. Thank you for sharing the celebration of the sun and other works of nature declaring the glory of God. Summer allows us to feel the warmth that the sky brings. It uplifts my spirit as does your photo and haiku. Ah, the glory of God’s handiwork is brilliantly shown through nature’s eyes. Your summering list is full of special events and love of Jesus. May your future summer items bring peace and joy.
