Netiquette – the set of rules one follows when behaving properly online.
Top Ten Rules for Computer Use
- Respect others. Always remember, you are talking to real people out there. Before posting anything, ask yourself: Would I say this to the person’s face?
- Follow the same polite and ethical standards of behavior online as you do in real life. Do to others, as you would have them do to you.
- Respect people’s time and space when posting.
- Take advantage of your anonymity.
- You will be judged only by the quality of your writing, not your color, gender, hair, eyes, weight, etc. Therefore, do a great job in your writing—spelling and grammar do count.
- Share your knowledge. It’s fun and makes the world a better place.
- Respect other people’s privacy. Never snoop in or interfere with anyone’s computer files.
- Never harm anyone’s work, files, or reputation.
- Never steal anyone’s work. Give credit where credit is due. Don’t cut-and-paste from Wikipedia or anywhere without directly quoting the source. (See how I cited my source below.)
- Be forgiving of others’ online mistakes.
