Slice of Life 17 – St. Patrick’s Day Snacks #sol24

17 March 2024 TwoWritingTeachers.org

There once was a rainbow minty way
to make special treats for midday
the luck of the Irish
will come right beside us
on this colorful and fine holiday

Green apples and caramel, Reuben pinwheels, Thin Mints and Caramel de-Lites, veggie rainbow with a pot of gold.

Today at Ethical ELA, we wrote poems inspired by “mondegreen”, which is “a series of words that result from the mishearing or misinterpretation of a statement or song lyric.” Mondegreen is a new word for me, and I realize how often I experience it. (Do come and share your poem about mondegreen or anything else about some song lyrics you’d like to share.)

Here is my found poem from the article “Lyrics to 60 Famously Misunderstood Songs” How many lines can you sing along to?

Mondegreen

Hold me closer Tony Danza
We built this city on sausage rolls
There’s a wino down the road
Give me the Beach Boys and free my soul
The ants are my friends, they’re blowing in the wind
Wrapped up like a douche another lover in the night
I can see clearly now, Lorraine is gone
Saving his life from this warm sausage tea
This is the dawning of the Age of Asparagus
I remove umbilicals

  1. Denise, what a marvelous find – these mixed up lyrics! You have me chuckling. These are great!

  2. HAHA I love your poem so much. I started humming to the ones I know….with the correct version, but also with the mixed up lyric?? 😂

Also, thanks for reminding me about open write!!!

  3. I got most of the songs! Very fun post. Also, it looks like a fun St. Patrick’s day gathering.

  4. I knew all the originals, and you made me laugh out loud! I had the best time with the mondegreen.

  5. Denise, I love the limerick and the gorgeous rainbow vegetables, and I also chuckle at the lyrics. Those are just fun, fun, fun. The ants are my friends, they’re blowing in the wind……now that’s just hilarious. I see images of little windblown ants flying by on a breeze, out of control……

  6. Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Denise! Yep – I knew each line. Ha-ha! (My husband says when he was young he would sing, “I’ve been through the desert on a horse named Joe Nameth….”

  7. Denise,
You are clever to create a found poem from the misunderstood lyrics, and that limerick gives me an idea. Thank you!

  8. So fun! I think I’ve made those mistakes on all those songs except the last one – I DO believe in miracles!
