Thank you all for being part of the Slice of Life Challenge of 2023 this month. It has been a joy to be here with you.  Thank you for reading my posts, making me feel seen, and sharing your beautiful slices of life. Today, I have tried one more poem in Spanish about the National Poetry Month poster above:

¡Genial!
Ahora hablo español.
Más o menos,
de todas formas.
Pero realmente
no puedo hablar español.
Puedo leer y escribir un poco.
Mucho más que antes.
Necesito aprender
en una clase,
para poder aprender mucho más.
Y necesito encontrar a una amiga para hablar en español.

Did I say what I tried to say? (I welcome any suggestions for improvement.)

Cool!
Now I speak Spanish.
More or less,
anyway.
But I can’t really speak Spanish.
I can read and write a little.
Much more than before.
I need to learn
in a class,
so I can learn much more.
And I need to find a friend to talk to in Spanish.

I’m trying a #MultiFri again today with a haiku (or make that a zappai). I figured with poetry maybe I can get away with grammatical errors more easily. (But do please let me know, Spanish speakers, if you have any advice on my first Spanish poetry attempt!)

About this poem: Esta chuchara es mi favorita! It is a spoon I reach for every single day! In my entire previous life, I have never been one to have a favorite piece of cutlery. But when I moved here, this found-in-the-drawer spoon became my go-to delight. Though not beautiful, I love the size and feel of the mouth-sized bowl more than the other spoons we bought. Even the thickness of the metal is perfect. Now it’s a habit that both my husband and I pull it out for me. This is my spoon.

Yo hablo inglés solamente. Porque quiero aprender español. Con Duolingo yo aprendo mucho cosas interesante. Yo escribo esta post con no ayuda.

Solo hablo ingles. Pero quiero aprender español. Con Duolingo, aprendo muchas cosas interesantes. Escribo esta publicación sin ayuda.

What I intended to say

I speak only English, but I want to learn Spanish. With Duolingo, I am learning many interesting things. I wrote this post without help.

OK, I don’t speak Spanish. The last time I studied in school was in Grade 9 in a Spanish 2 class. Now, I’m doing one or two lessons a day in Duolingo, sometimes more.

I am on a 43-day streak! Woohoo! (Mr. Wilkinson is at 800+ days in a row!) But as you can see above, I forget a lot of things that I’m learning. For instance, I said “mucho cosas interesante” instead of muchas cosas interesantes, which sounds much more beautiful when said correctly.

Here are a few more things I can say since I’ve recently passed Checkpoint 1 on Duolingo:

Yo tengo dos hermanos y cuatro hermanas.

Yo tengo dos hijas y uno esposo.

Este vestido azul es muy bonito.

Yo quiero hablar español.
